An independent state since 1960, the Republic of Mali underwent a turbulent political past, including a 22-year dictatorship, before democracy was restored in 1991. With an area of 1,241 km2, Mali is one of largest countries in Western Africa. 70% of the country's population of 13,500 lives in rural areas. Its population density varies from 90 people per square kilometer along the river Niger, to fewer than five people per square kilometer in the desert regions of the north.

Health situation

Life expectancy in Mali is no more than 47 years, infant mortality stands at 12%, and over 31% of children under the age of 5 are underweight. Although the urban population has access to drinking water, only 38% of rural Malians have access to it. Another indication of the urban/rural health imbalance is the fact that children living in rural areas are 1.4 times more likely to die before reaching the age of 5 than children living in cities.

Infectious diseases are difficult to control in Mali, where there are only eight doctors for every 100,000 people. Over 212,000 adults are affected by HIV / AIDS and only 37% of them receive antiretroviral treatment. Tuberculosis affects 78,000 Malians and 38% of children under the age of 5 are treated for malaria.
