15 years ago, Dr. Calil Farhat, founder of the World Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, initiated the first 'Vaccinology' congress in Brazil. He had envisioned this event as a way to stimulate the scientific exchange of knowledge and expertise in vaccines in Latin America.

In Playa Herradura, Costa Rica, the seventh edition of ‘Vaccinology’ attracted a sizeable audience of people working in public health, doctors, experts from across South America, as well as representatives from organizations such as WHO and PAHO (Pan American Health Oragnization). This event was organized under the auspices of SLIPE (Sociedad Latinoamericana de Infectología Pediátrica), API (Asociación Panamericana de Infectología) and Fondation Mérieux.

Dr. Raúl Istúriz, Chairman of ‘Vaccinology 2010’ delivered the keynote speech on the importance of this event in South America; to continue education in scientific vaccine advances, and as a place to share experiences.

The Minister of Health of Costa Rica, María Luisa Ávila, talked about the importance that vaccines have for her country and that they are an essential element for its administration.

Doctor Ávila closed the ceremony by sharing a message from the former President of Costa Rica, Mr. Oscar Arias “And we owe this to the millions of children who will be born and expect from us to build a healthier world”.
