The Mérieux Foundation has made a donation to the Pharmacy Department in the University of Antananarivo/Ankatso's Faculty of Medicine as part of a project to improve the quality of healthcare training.

This grant covers the purchase of a generator and ten copies of the reference book Pharmacie clinique et dispositifs médicaux (“Clinical Pharmacy and Medical Devices”), to help improve teaching conditions and access to essential resources for students.

The need for this manual was identified by the teaching staff in the Pharmacy Department. Until now, theoretical teaching has concentrated primarily on medication, paying little attention to the detailed study of medical devices, despite their essential importance in the pharmacist’s role. The new books will give fourth- and fifth-year students a better understanding of issues relating to medical devices, from regulations to clinical applications. Available at the University library for study on the premises or for borrowing, the copies will provide valuable support for the nearly 250 students in the department.

“These books will significantly enrich the teaching of our pharmacy students by giving them a detailed understanding of the use of medical devices. The role of a pharmacist involves more than just knowing about drugs; it also includes expertise in the tools essential for treatment. This donation thus represents an essential step in ensuring our future pharmacists are fully trained and ready to meet the needs of health centers,” says Professor David Ramanitrahasimbola, Head of the Pharmacy Department.

At the same time, the generator offers a vital solution to the frequent power cuts in Antananarivo. These interruptions disrupt practical laboratory work, and often mean analyses have to be started all over again following an outage.

Through this support, the Mérieux Foundation is contributing to the development of future pharmacists’ practical and theoretical skills, consolidating their ability to offer patients comprehensive and effective care.
