Support to clinical biology laboratories

  • SPHaïtiLab project
    SPHaitiLab is a project to support the National Laboratory of Public Health whose main objective is to improve the health of Haitian population through analysis and strategic advice on laboratory policy. It is mainly funded by the European Commission.

  • Strengthening bacteriology laboratory staff skills and provision of a technical assistant in medical biology for the Institute of Infectious Diseases and Reproductive Health (IMIS)*

  • Collaboration with Médecins sans Frontières hospital for the analysis of samples for the sensitivity of different bacteria to antibiotics.

Current research projects

GABRIEL network multi-center studies

  • Epidemiological study to identify the pathogens responsible for severe pneumonia in children under 5 years of age
    The objective is to identify viral and bacterial agents associated with severe pneumonia in hospitalized children to determine the etiologic distribution and involvement in pneumonia.

  • Development of diagnostic tools for pneumonia:
    Streptococcus pneumoniae strain typing in multiplex PCR.

  • Quality initiative
    Haiti is one of 4 pilot sites for an initiative designed to help GABRIEL member laboratories meet the requirements for international ISO 15189 accreditation.

Training and knowledge-sharing

  • Bachelor of Science in Biological and Applied Medical Sciences (BAMS)
    BAMS enables healthcare professionals to strengthen both their skills and theoretical knowledge. Classes during the 8-month course are provided by experts in clinical biology (cellular and molecular biology, immunology, parasitology, bacteriology, epidemiology, virology, and hematology). The course participants deepen their understanding of good laboratory practices, quality control, biosecurity and the logistics of managing a laboratory.

  • A Health Education module on water in Haitian primary school
    In partnership with the Academy of Sciences, educational materials have been developed by Fondation Mérieux to set up training sessions in primary schools on water.

Support to local initiatives

  • Communauté de l’Incarnation children’s home in Leogane*
    Fondation Mérieux support the development of the institution and improve the living conditions of children and carers through the construction of houses, access to clean water, better nutrition but also provision of school supplies, access to care and development of income generating activities.

  • Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal children’s home in Cap Haitian*
    Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal children’s home, managed by Sister Godelive welcomes 500 children in the renovated school and close to a hundred residents in the orphanage. With the support of Fondation Christophe et Rodolphe Mérieux, Fondation Mérieux implements projects to increase the capacity and improve the living conditions of the institution.

  • Micro-credit loan program for HIV-positive women
    In collaboration with ACME** and GHESKIO, the program offers to HIV positive women training sessions on managing an income-generating activity. These women also have the opportunity to benefit from micro- credit to support their business.

  • Association Klib Timoun Kè Kontan (AKTKK)*
    Supported by Fondation Christophe et Rodolphe Mérieux, the AKTKK association aims to help disadvantaged children by giving them the opportunity to learn a trade (such as baking, embroidery, floral art, crafts).

  • Support for the French AAIP association (Firefighter’s International Aid Actions)*
    Created by AAIP (Firefighter’s international aid actions) in Jacmel, this medical center works to provide care for patients in need of medical treatment (medical consultation, vaccination, pediatric monitoring, etc. ...).
